Snowpiercer

BR RATING: 6.5 / 10

The predecessor to Bong Joon Ho’s acclaimed Parasite, Snowpiercer is an interesting commentary about class warfare, climate change, and how humanity perpetuates the cycle of our existing problems by keeping them outside our purview. If you keep this perspective in mind while watching and do not get bogged down in details of the plot holes or the random, eccentric characters, it is worth the watch. Overall, the pace of action keeps you entertained, but the film does not have the same polish as Parasite.

A Quiet Place

BR RATING: 5.5 / 10

The movie is better than its oft-compared counterpart, Bird Box, due to the fact that you can actually see the creatures. However, similar to Bird Box, there are just too many plot holes to ignore and a myriad of unclear questions around the capabilities of these creatures. Overall, the acting is high-quality and the movie entertaining. There are higher hopes for “A Quiet Place II”, where it looks like they will answer some of the many questions you have after this movie.

Parasite

BR Rating: 7.5 / 10

The first hour felt much longer than that, but the second hour is a memorable one. In the second hour, there are laughs, suspense, and twists that were unexpected with a satisfying ending. As a movie with societal commentary, it does well but falls short of the statement and impact of Joker. It’s original and entertaining, but does not completely live up to Best Picture title.

Knives Out

BR RATING: 6.5 / 10

Though the movie feels like it drags, Knives Out is a clever, updated take on a murder mystery. It keeps you guessing on the “how” even when you think you know the answer. The movie doesn’t take it self too seriously and as long as you can get over Daniel Craig’s southern accent, you will find it entertaining.

Harriet

BR RATING: 5 / 10

This movie could have been better if it stuck to the actual history and great achievements of Harriet Tubman. It could have been a better period piece and showcased more of the brutality and tribulations endured by Harriet (and slaves during this period). It felt slow at times, jumped around, and did not give enough time to William Still and Marie Buchanan. The antagonistic slave owner Gideon Brodess was unconvincing and fell very flat.

Ad Astra

BR RATING: 5 / 10

It’s no Interstellar. It is slow at times but the cinematography is great. Brad Pitt plays the role well but the payoff and climax falls flat. You journey with Brad through the entire movie for him to get where he is going, only for it to be resolved quickly without much of a point.

Allen’s Take: “Ad ASSSSSSSSStra. That’s the review.”

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker

BR RATING: 5.5 / 10

Rise of Skywalker panders to all of the fans that were pissed off about Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi. It basically tried to undo everything Rian Johnson did. Overall, it was entertaining, but did include lots of choppy scenes and predictable twists, though they were done pretty well. It is worth a see and how much you will like it will depend on how much you liked The Last Jedi.

Joker

BR RATING: 9 / 10

Joaquin is great. It’s a legit character study movie of someone with mental illness, NOT a comic book movie. The writing is good and they have an interesting tie into the Batman story. Overall, you feel sad and disturbed by the movie and it all feels very real.
